Frequently Asked Questions

Does IEFT focus on education for girls?
You bet. Historically, females have been kept out of the classroom in Tanzania due to teenage pregnancy, early marriage and negative attitudes toward women's educational capabilities. However, statistics show that, when cultures agree to educate their females with formal schooling, societal life improves overall. Studies show that just one extra year of schooling at the secondary level improves a girl's eventual wages by 15-25%, 90% of which she will reinvest in her family. With seven years of secondary schooling, the average girl also marries 4 years later than normal and has 2.2 fewer children. Since women and girls in many African societies do majority of the housework, gathering of food and water and taking care of the children, females who attend school learn more about family health, proper food preparation, the importance of finding clean, disease-free water, and pregnancy and child nutrition, thus becoming better mothers and homemakers. When this happens, infant mortality rates plummet, as do rates of disease infections and congenital and childhood disabilities. Also, females who go to school are more likely to send their sons and daughters in the next generation to attend classes.

Why do students need sponsors to attend school?
The average Tanzanian lives on less than $1 per day. Due to school fees, majority of families cannot afford to send their children to school. Private and boarding schools are expensive. IEFT makes sure its school monthly fees are affordable for families. The organization is able to do this through student sponsorships, where a FULL Sponsorship costs just US$100 per month or HALF Sponsorships, which cost just US$50 per month for each student. Through this program, families in Lashaine Village are then able to afford  the buy-in school fee of just US$25 per year.

"It really is a great school because it provides education to children who do not have parents and do not have the money to pay for school fees at other secondary schools in the area."
